This surgery is done primarily under anesthesia, although some patients may be given the option of local anesthesia based on the complexity of their specific surgery. The procedure involves incisions made either to the back of the ears or inside the folds of the ear to gain access to the ear cartilage. This technique allows the cartilage to be removed or manipulated to reshape and reposition the ear.
The incisions are closed with stitches to secure the ears in their new position. A bandage dressing is placed after surgery to protect the newly shaped ears and is worn for approximately one week.
